It’s estimated over 1 million Australians were impacted by data breaches in the second half of 2022. Aside from the impact on individuals, breaches come with significant fines for organisations.

Although data privacy is top of mind for organisations, implementing processes and protections to address the issue can be complex.

Onqlave allows engineers to implement fast, scalable and secure application-level encryption in minutes.

An experienced duo

Simon O’Keefe and Matt Mahdieh are the co-founders of Onqlave. Matt has an engineering and solutions architect background and Simon is experienced in US enterprise GTM.

A secure Onqlave

Both Matt and Simon had seen the challenges of implementing effective data privacy controls. Onqlave solves security and privacy by protecting the data and providing the tools for granular access control that provides scalable access to only those that have consent to use it.

The Onqlave platform:

  • keeps sensitive data protected with application-level encryption that’s fast and scalable
  • allows organisations to protect data without it leaving their environment
  • is designed for engineers. It can be up and running in minutes, with no disruption to an organisation’s tech stack.

Both Matt and Simon have seen how challenging it can be to control data, especially when it is duplicated within an organisation. “There should be one source of truth for data, particularly sensitive data. We came up with an idea for how organisations can implement an architecture that provides one source of truth, and the owners of data could control consent around that data,” explains Simon.

The name Onqlave is inspired by the word ‘enclave’. “We think one of the most critical parts of solving privacy is to create a vault for data, an enclave, or a siloed place for that information,” says Simon.

What’s next

Onqlave have a team of eight and are building a customer base. “We really want to help developers and engineers who don’t have know-how around privacy,” says Simon. Initial customers will likely include start ups and scale ups in the SaaS space. “We think we can help improve their lives quite quickly,” says Simon.
